It has been an interesting couple of weeks for former Milwaukee Brewers players finding new homes with different teams. At the end of May, Keston Hiura was called up by the Colorado Rockies, hoping that he can provide a boost to the worst team in Major League Baseball.
A few days ago, former Brewers All-Star catcher Omar Narvaez signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros after previously being released by the Chicago White Sox.
And now, another former fan-favorite has found a new home, one that may eventually lead to his return to the Majors.
According to MLB Trade Rumors, former Brewers outfielder Ben Gamel has signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels. That being said, it sounds like this minor league signing has more to do with giving Gamel more time to rehab from an injury than the belief that he cannot help the Major League club. Since the Angeles outfield is right-handed heavy, the belief is Gamel will be called up as soon as he is physically ready:
“Now that he’s signed with the Angels, it seems likely the Gamel will return to minor league games in the near future as he looks to earn an opportunity in Anaheim’s outfield mix. A heavily right-handed outfield should work in Gamel’s favor in terms of earning a big league opportunity.
“Gamel has been a consistent, roughly league average performer in the majors for nearly a decade now and seems likely to fight his way back to the majors in some capacity before the season is up, so long as he’s healthy and able to resume playing.”
Gamel spent two seasons with the Brewers, who acquired him via trade for Domingo Santana from the Seattle Mariners, hitting .245/.331/.381 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI in 174 games played.
Throughout his nine-year MLB career, Gamel has played for the New York Yankees, Mariners, Brewers, Cleveland Guardians, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and Houston Astros.
He last appeared in the Majors in 2024 with the Astros, hitting .259/.377/.362 with a home run and four RBI in 20 games.
