All 30 teams are looking to fill out the spaces of their roster or to engage in the competition to test out more efficient players.
Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Sims has secured his spot with a team by signing a one-year; $3 million deal with the Washington Nationals.
Sims spent five full seasons and seven total playing for the Cincinnati Reds after a year and a half with the Atlanta Braves. He followed up a stellar 2023 season with a solid performance at the beginning of the year with Cincinnati.
In the first 43 games and 35.1 innings played for the Reds last season, he accounted for an ERA of 3.57. He only allowed 30 hits, 14 runs, six home runs, and 20 walks while delivering 40 strikeouts.
The Reds made Sims a valuable trade asset to a team needing a right-handed relief pitcher. The Red Sox were the team that took the immediate contributor to the bullpen by trading minor league pitcher Ovis Portes to the Reds on July 30.
While Sims was great in his last year and a half with the Reds he wasn’t as efficient when he became a Red Sox. In the 15 games and 14 innings played, Sims allowed 11 hits, 10 runs, two home runs, and 10 walks while delivering nine strikeouts. He finished his disappointing short career with the Red Sox with a 6.43 ERA.
Sims is looking to bounce back from his first serious backslide since the 2022 season. He will look to do it with a Nationals team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2019 when the team won the World Series.
