Former World Series Champion Opts Out of Minors Deal With Brewers
USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers have been trying to stock up on experienced position player depth in Triple-A Nashville the past few weeks. However, it appears they're about to lose one of their most experienced additions down there.

Outfielder Eddie Rosario, a 2021 World Series champion with the Atlanta Braves, has triggered a June 15th opt out in his minor league contract with the Brewers. He will immediately become a free agent.

As a vested veteran, his contract contained clauses that allowed him to opt out if he wasn't added to the major league roster quickly enough. The Brewers chose not to add Rosario.

In Triple-A Nashville, Rosario was hitting .290/.373/.449 with a pair of homers and six stolen bases in 20 games. His numbers were more than good enough offensively to warrant consideration for a promotion. However, defensively is where Rosario tends to struggle and defense is a priority for the Brewers.

When Daz Cameron was placed on the paternity list a few days ago, that would've been a prime opportunity to call up Rosario and make a change in the outfield. However, the Brewers instead chose to call up Drew Avans, who was claimed on waivers earlier in the week.

Avans has options remaining and was already on the 40 man roster while Rosario would've needed a 40 man spot to make that move. Rosario's track record is much better but the Brewers chose to give the 29 year old Avans an opportunity instead.

Rosario is immediately eligible to sign with another team.

The Brewers have Garrett Mitchell and Blake Perkins out on rehab assignments, which would've cut into the playing time for Rosario anyway.
