Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias is set to take a major step toward returning to the majors.

According to MLB.com's Tim Stebbins, the 26-year-old shortstop is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

The update is encouraging for Arias, who currently sits on the 60-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. He has not played since April 6 and has been limited to just 10 games this season.

In 32 plate appearances, Arias is slashing .200/.250/.433 with one double, two home runs, and four RBIs. He has also recorded 12 strikeouts compared to just two walks.

While Arias may be nearing a return, Cleveland's infield picture has become increasingly crowded during his absence.

Opening Day second baseman Brayan Rocchio shifted to shortstop following Arias's injury and is currently putting together a career year. Rocchio is slashing .289/.369/.407 with four home runs, 28 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.

Meanwhile, second baseman Travis Bazzana has impressed since making his MLB debut on April 28. In 32 games with the Guardians, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick is hitting .282 with an .806 OPS.

Both infielders are making strong pushes for All-Star consideration, making Arias' role upon his return uncertain.

Elsewhere around the infield, José Ramírez has third base firmly locked down, while Kyle Manzardo has been scorching hot the last few weeks at first base. The 25-year-old is slashing .327/.411/.714 with five home runs over his last 15 games.

Manzardo continued that success against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two doubles.

Despite the crowded infield, Arias does offer valuable defensive versatility. Last season, he made 102 starts at shortstop, but also saw action at second base (19 starts) and third base (three starts). He has additionally played outfield during his career, though his time there has been limited.

Arias' defense is something Cleveland will surely want to keep in the mix. His three Outs Above Average and 92.5 mph arm strength last season both ranked well above league average.

Even with his defensive value, Arias's offensive production may make it difficult for him to reclaim an everyday role. Last season, he slashed just .220/.274/.363 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs across 129 games.

For his career, Arias is a .215 hitter with a .273 on-base percentage over 977 at-bats.

The Guardians will have an important decision to make in the near future regarding Arias' role once he is activated. But for now, the priority remains getting healthy and finding his rhythm again as he begins his rehab assignment.

Cleveland will look to complete a sweep of New York on Thursday afternoon at 1:35 ET.
