The Los Angeles Dodgers lucked their way into the NLCS for their eighth appearance in the last 13 seasons. They beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game Four on a walk-off error, the first of its kind in the postseason. Now the defending champions await their next opponent, depending on who wins Game Five: the upstart Chicago Cubs or the powerhouse first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cubs have pushed their way into the conversation of winning the World Series after forcing the Brewers to a Game Five. Suppose they prevail and shock the baseball world by beating Milwaukee? Chicago will face the defending champions for their first appearance in the Fall Classic since their drought-breaking win in 2016. The two teams have history as they knocked each other out in the 2016 and 2017 NLCS.
This potential matchup will, on paper, favor the Dodgers, boasting their superteam with multiple All-Stars and MVPs. The Cubs have a team on fire, with their bats being their strongest argument to beat Los Angeles. If Chicago can get to the Dodgers’ bullpen, they have a shot of dealing major damage. The young duo of Roki Sasaki and Emmet Sheehan, who became starters turned relievers for the playoffs, can startle the batting lineup. The Cubs’ best way of making this a series is to get to the relievers the Dodgers would rather not place on the mound to score runs.
The Brewers coasted their way to the first-place position in the NL this season. Philadelphia and Los Angeles were on their toes for most of the season, but couldn’t catch up all year long. There were discussions about the fact that the Phillies/Dodgers series was considered the real NLCS, with Milwaukee or Chicago being viewed as mere fodder for the winning team. The Brewers’ pitching will change that opinion when they push Los Angeles to the brink of elimination.
The Brewers have to get through the Cubs in Game Five before facing the Dodgers in the NLCS for a chance to make their return to the World Series. Milwaukee’s sole appearance in the World Series was in 1982, where they lost in seven games. The Brewers hope to clinch a World Series spot and win their franchise’s first championship after beating Los Angeles.
If either the Cubs or the Brewers win Game Five to face the Dodgers, the result will be the same. Chicago can give Los Angeles a fight, but they will be pushed to the side as they lose in five games. The potential Milwaukee/Los Angeles series will be a toss-up, but the Dodgers will play small ball with few mistakes to win the NLCS in six games.
The NLCS will be another exciting set of games in the 2025 MLB postseason. The defending champions will attempt to win back-to-back World Series titles as they smother their opponent in the NLCS.
Game 1 of the NLCS starts on Monday, October 13th.
