John Gibbons 'could reunite with Anthopoulos'

With the World Series concluded, all eyes are on Danny Lehmann — the seemingly most popular candidate to become the Atlanta Braves’ next manager. However, Braves beat writer Mark Bowman is reporting that John Gibbons shouldn’t be completely ruled out, despite his earlier indications to the contrary.

John Gibbons was the manager of the Blue Jays during Alex Anthopoulos’ tenure as general manager in Toronto. Most recently, he served as the bench coach for the New York Mets, a position he stepped down from following the conclusion of the season.

The 63-year-old Gibbons has 11 seasons of managerial experience across two stints with the Blue Jays, compiling a 793-789 record. During that time, he led Toronto to the postseason twice, advancing to the American League Championship Series in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016.

The Braves have always been an organization that keeps things extremely close to the vest, which explains why so little has leaked about their ongoing managerial search. Every insider report should be taken with a grain of salt, but the fact that Mark Bowman has walked back his original statement dismissing Gibbons as a candidate is noteworthy.

It’s also worth mentioning that both Gibbons and Dodgers bench coach Danny Lehmann have prior ties to Alex Anthopoulos — Gibbons from their shared time in Toronto, and Lehmann from his years in Los Angeles as a video scout while Anthopoulos was part of the Dodgers’ front office.
