Ken Rosenthal drops obvious Mets’ Luke Weaver trade demand

With the New York Mets going through a disappointing 2026 season, the team is also preparing for the MLB trade deadline, which is right around the corner on Aug. 2. While the Mets are surrounded by rumors, one name that has been speculated about is pitcher Luke Weaver, though this MLB insider wouldn’t get rid of him too easily.

So far this season, the reliever in Weaver has recorded a 1.93 ERA to go along with 43 strikeouts in 42 innings (40 game appearances). Speaking on “Foul Territory,” Ken Rosenthal would ponder if New York wants to compete next season, with Weaver being a key piece along with other stars.

“Luke Weaver is a guy with an additional year of control. The Mets want to compete next season,” Weaver said. “Of course they do. They’re not going to rebuild. Do you keep Luke Weaver and ultimately make him a big part of your team next year? As he could be, with [Juan] Soto, [Francisco] Lindor, the kids…the kids in the rotation, [Nolan] McLean and Christian Scott. Or do you trade him knowing that reliever performance is volatile and knowing that Luke Weaver might not be as good next year as he is this year? Very few relievers are that good year to year.”

Speaking about the possibility of the Mets trading Weaver, Rosenthal would express that if the team gets “the right offer,” then he would do it. However, with the team wanting to compete and the position of relief pitcher being volatile, it would need an ideal package to deal him.

“If I’m the Mets, I’m taking another swing next year,” Rosenthal said. “I’ve got money. I’ve got guys coming off the books. I’ve got things I can do. Maybe Bo Bichette is back. If so, good. But you can’t simply ignore, as well, all that has happened this season, and you can’t ignore the possibility of trading a reliever again, one of the more volatile positions, the most volatile position in the sport.”

It remains to be seen what New York does at the trade deadline, especially with Weaver.
