Kyle Harrison’s season has gone from breakout to breakdown

After tossing five innings of one-run baseball on Aug. 25, Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Kyle Harrison had lowered his season ERA to 2.79 and was among the top pitchers in MLB.

Milwaukee certainly couldn't have expected what the next four outings would hold for Harrison, and he's all of a sudden gone from the clear No. 2 option in the rotation to potentially not even making postseason appearances.

Kyle Harrison has collapsed in his last four outings

Harrison made his fourth appearance since Aug. 25 on Thursday, and it didn't go much better than any of the previous three. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs.

With the four runs allowed on Thursday, Harrison has now allowed 21 earned runs in just nine innings over his last four appearances. That comes out to a 21.00 ERA in that span, and the poor four-game stretch has raised Harrison's season ERA from 2.79 to 4.25.

What has gone wrong for Kyle Harrison?

When digging into the advanced numbers to try and figure out what has happened to Harrison, there is no real answer. The average velocity on his pitches has actually increased during the stretch, making the magnitude of his struggles even more confusing.

Whatever the issue is, Milwaukee will certainly need to get it figured out before it begins postseason play.

Who is the No. 2 option behind Jacob Misiorowski?

With Harrison seemingly pitching his way out of the circle of trust, the Brewers and manager Pat Murphy will now have to figure out who the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation is.

Superstar right-hander Jacob Misiorowski is the clear No. 1, and the No. 2 option may be clear as well. Right-hander Logan Henderson has been outstanding in his first full season in the majors, posting a 10-3 record with a 2.51 ERA across 17 starts.

Barring a collapse, Henderson will be the clear and obvious No. 2 choice behind Misiorowski, and everything after that could possibly be based on what Murphy feels is the best matchup.
