Looking to avoid dubious mark, Angels outlast Mariners

Christian Moore had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-4 Thursday night.

Julio Rodriguez homered for the Mariners (74-85), whose postseason hopes were dashed when Texas defeated the New York Mets earlier in the day.

Josh Lowe also had a single and a double and scored three times for the Angels (61-98), who are trying to avoid the first 100-loss season in franchise history.

The Angels took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the sixth off Mariners starter Bryan Woo (12-10). Moises Ballesteros drew a leadoff walk and, an out later, Lowe was hit by a pitch. Moore doubled to center to bring home both runners.

Los Angeles added an insurance run in the eighth off reliever Cooper Criswell. Denzer Guzman drew a leadoff walk and scored from second when Bryce Teodosio lined a two-out single to right.

The Angels opened the scoring in the top of the second. Lowe lined a two-out single to center and Moore followed with a bloop single to center that just avoided the glove of an onrushing Rodriguez, with Lowe scoring from first on the play.

The Mariners responded in the bottom of the frame off Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez (5-8). Cal Raleigh drew a leadoff walk off and Rodriguez hit a 451-foot blast off the batter's eye in center field, the second-longest homer of his career. Josh Naylor walked and Cole Young singled before Lazaro Montes grounded into a double play. Leo Rivas lined a single to right to score Naylor and make it 3-1.

The Angels tied it in the fifth after Lowe led off with a double to left. Moore whiffed at a dropped third strike, with catcher Raleigh's errant throw putting runners at second and third. Teodosio brought home one run with a groundout and Zach Neto lined a single to left to even the score at 3-3.

J.P. Crawford led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on a wild pitch to put the Mariners up 4-3.

The Angels' Rodriguez allowed four runs on five hits over five innings. The right-hander walked five and struck out two. Ryan Watson pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Woo, a right-hander, gave up five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings, with three walks and eight strikeouts.
