Fried was pulled from Wednesday’s 7-0 loss against the Baltimore Orioles after 61 pitches. After the game, Fried said his left elbow felt hyperextended and that he felt some discomfort in his triceps.
It’s been a shaky start to the season for Fried compared to last season. Through 10 starts, he has a 4-3 record and a 3.21 ERA. Last season he finished 19-5 in 32 starts, with a 2.86 ERA, finishing fourth in the American League Cy Young race. It was also the first year of his eight-year, $218 million contract.
However, it’s not all bad news for the Yankees. Ace Gerrit Cole is set to return in the upcoming weeks from Tommy John surgery rehab. Carlos Rodon made his season debut Sunday after offseason elbow surgery. The middle of the rotation has also stood its ground, thanks to consistent play from Cam Schlittler and Will Warren.
