Mets Claim Pierson Ohl

The Mets have claimed right-hander Pierson Ohl off waivers from the Rockies, reports Chelsea Janes of SNY. Colorado has announced the move.

The Rockies cut Ohl from their 40-man roster less than a year after acquiring him in a January 2026 trade with the Twins. They didn’t end up getting any contributions from Ohl, who underwent Tommy John surgery in late February and missed the entire season. He began throwing in August in hopes of returning in 2027. If he does, it could be as a member of the Mets.

Now 27 years old, Ohl has spent most of his pro career with the Twins organization. They drafted him in the 14th round in 2021 and helped him develop into a decent prospect. When they selected Ohl’s contract in July 2025, he owned a microscopic 3.6% walk rate in the minors. He continued limiting walks during a 14-appearance, 30-inning major league debut that year, as he issued free passes at a 5.3% clip. While that accompanied an unspectacular strikeout rate (20.3%) and a high ERA (5.10), Ohl posted more encouraging underlying numbers. ERA estimators such as SIERA (3.87), xFIP (3.99), FIP (4.20) and xERA (4.78) all suggested he deserved a better fate.

After a lost year with Colorado, Ohl will attempt to establish himself with his third organization. He is joining the Mets with a full slate of options and a good track record at the lower levels, where he has typically leaned on a low-90s fastball and an 81 mph changeup. Most of Ohl’s minor league work has come in Double-A ball, where he has logged a 3.47 ERA in 228 innings.
