Mets-Rockies snowed out, will try for Saturday doubleheader

While expected warm and even hot temperatures are impacting portions of the country days before the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a different type of weather will keep the traveling New York Mets and hosting Colorado Rockies indoors through at least early Saturday.

As Mike Rosenstein explained for NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, the Friday evening showdown between the Mets and Rockies has been postponed due to winter weather. Both Evan Roberts of WFAN and Newsday’s Tim Healey previously reported Friday's matchup would likely be snowed out:

Virtually no chance the Mets play today. The real key is if Coors Field will be playable/if they can sneak in a game Saturday.

As of now, the official plan shared by the MLB website is for the 26-14 Mets and 18-19 Rockies to meet for a split doubleheader on Saturday. The opening contest will hopefully get underway at 3:10 p.m. ET, and the second game is scheduled to start at 8:40 p.m. ET.

However, Rosenstein noted the weather could prevent the clubs from playing on Saturday, as well.

"Snow showers before 11 am, then rain and snow showers. Some thunder is also possible," read a forecast posted by Rosenstein. "High near 42. East northeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible."

It's brutal timing for the Mets to encounter a congested schedule that includes even one doubleheader, as they are currently without starting pitchers Tylor Megill, Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom because of injury setbacks. Per Allison McCague of Amazin Avenue, the Mets will likely need either a spot-starter or to utilize a bullpen game at some point over the next week if they have to play three contests before Sunday night ends.
