With most of the high-end players already getting new deals, Kyle Tucker is probably the most prominent free agent still up for grabs.
Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s going to take calls from all teams, as just a handful of contenders seem to have a legitimate chance to get him.
Over the past couple of weeks, the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as the most prominent candidates to sign him.
And while that would usually mean they have to engage in a bidding war to acquire his services, it seems like the Mets are looking to do things their own way.
“Outfielder Kyle Tucker, the top free agent available this offseason, has been offered a short-term deal by the New York Mets that is believed to be worth $50 million per season,” reported ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.
Tucker was believed to be interested in a long-term deal. Per Rogers, the Blue Jays have made him a long-term offer, although the AAV might be significantly lower.
Tucker will now have to decide whether he wants long-term stability on a lesser annual average or to maximize his earning potential in the next couple of years.
He will be 29 next season and is just entering his prime years, so it makes sense that he wants to get more years in his next contract. For now, no team seems to have a clear edge in the situation.
