The Milwaukee Brewers won their sixth consecutive game on Saturday, blowing out the Philadelphia Phillies, the best team in the National League, 17-7. They will go for the series sweep on Sunday when Jose Quintana returns from the injured list to start for Milwaukee, who are now 31-28 on the season.
Quintana’s return is certainly a welcome one, seeing as he has a 4-1 record and 2.65 ERA in six starts so far this season. After his season debut was delayed due to his late signing this spring, Quintana became the first Brewers pitcher since Hall of Famer CC Sabathia to win his first four starts with Milwaukee.
Of course, to make room for Quintana on the roster, someone had to go.
As mentioned, the Brewers defeated the Phillies 17-7 on Saturday in order to win their sixth straight game. However, the game was not even as close as the final score would have made it seem. Philadelphia came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning with Milwaukee holding a 17-2 lead.
However, struggling reliever Tyler Alexander allowed five runs in the inning, allowing the Phillies to make the score somewhat more respectable. This inflated his already high season ERA to 6.19.
On Sunday, the Brewers announced that they had designated him for assignment:

Out of options, Alexander had to be designated or assignment instead of sent straight to Nashville and Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate. Should he not be claimed by any other MLB team, the Brewers can then outright him to the minors.
With Quintana back, the Brewers did not have a need for another left-handed pitcher, especially with DL Hall and Aaron Ashby, both southpaws, coming out of the bullpen now.
