Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta has been all but spotless in the month of August. In five starts covering 28 innings, he has allowed one run on 11 hits and struck out 34. After shutting out Toronto through six for the win on Friday, Peralta has what amounts to a historic case for Pitcher of the Month.

Peralta gives Milwaukee Brewers yet another sparkling start in August

Per OptaSTATS, he is the only modern era pitcher (since 1900) to record at least 25 innings with 30 strikeouts, one run allowed, and fewer than 12 hits in a calendar month. The five starts that produced those numbers:

Not only should Peralta be a lock for Pitcher of the Month, he is a clearcut top three Cy Young candidate. On the season, he has an MLB-leading 16 wins, a 2.58 ERA, and 168 strikeouts in 153.2 innings. His 5.0 WAR is third among active National League award candidates (Zack Wheeler, at 5.2, is done for the year). His 28 starts are tied for the most in baseball.

While he is unlikely to surpass Paul Skenes (Pirates) atop the voting leaderboard, Peralta is the ace on the team with the best record, has impressive individual stats, and a real case to leapfrog the Phillies’ Cristopher Sanchez for second place on the ballot.

His start yesterday, against a Blue Jays offense that leads the majors in batting average and OBP and ranks third in OPS, is prime evidence of his dominance. In those six scoreless frames, Peralta held Toronto’s potent lineup to one hit and one walk while whiffing eight. Now 84-52, the Brewers cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Saturday, after being scratched from his Wednesday outing, Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.44 ERA) is scheduled to face Kevin Gausman (8-10, 3.87 ERA). First pitch is at 2:07 PM CT.
