The Milwaukee Brewers have made several crucial roster changes as they begin a four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night. Jacob Misiorowski, the organization’s top pitching prospect, fourth overall prospect, and the 68th overall prospect in all of baseball, is making his Major League debut as he makes his first start.
In order to make room for Misiorowski on the roster, the Brewers sent Easton McGee back down to Triple-A Nashville. Additionally, Milwaukee transferred Brandon Woodruff to the 60-day injured list in order to clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster. This does not mean that the two-time All-Star will be out an additional 60 days. He will still be able to come off the injured list as soon as he is ready.
With Misiorowski’s spot on the team settled, the Brewers still needed to find a spot for him in the starting rotation. In order to do this, they moved Aaron Civale to the bullpen, a decision that prompted the right-handed pitcher to request a trade.
As Brewers fans are well-aware, Milwaukee has not had their preferred roster healthy yet. Blake Perkins, who starred in centerfield last year and plays Gold-Glove caliber defense, was injured in Spring Training when he fouled a ball off of his leg, fracturing it.
Garrett Mitchell, who was the starting centerfielder this season, has been out for weeks with an oblique strain. He was hitting .206/.286/.294 with three RBI when he went down.
Nestor Cortes, whom the Brewers acquired in the trade of Devin Williams to the New York Yankees, is currently on the injured list with an elbow injury. He has only made two starts this year, and is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA.
Robert Gasser, who had Tommy John surgery last year, is progressing towards his return to the Majors, though he still has months to go. He was 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts for Milwaukee last season.
On Thursday, the Brewers provided positive injury updates on all four of them:
Injury updates:
-Robert Gasser is scheduled to face hitters in a live BP in AZ this week.
-Garrett Mitchell is on track to go on a rehab stint next week w/ Nashville. Blake Perkins could join him a few days after that.
-Nestor Cortes is throwing a second bullpen tomorrow.

Previously, manager Pat Murphy indicated that it is very unlikely that Cortes will return before the All-Star Break. Gasser is not expected back until August at the earliest.
That said, it appears that both Mitchell and Perkins will be the first players to return to the Majors for the Brewers. If this is the case, hopefully they can bring some offense with them as Milwaukee’s bats have gone cold as of late.
