Following the Tuesday callup of top prospect Jacob Misiorowski, Milwaukee Brewers fans awaited his debut with bated breath. Paving the way for a 6-0 win over the Cardinals, the 23-year-old right-hander did not disappoint.
In five innings of work, Misiorowski failed to allow a hit, sitting St. Louis hitters down with the torrid fastball he has been blazing by minor leaguers down at Triple-A Nashville. He did issue four walks, a bugaboo of his throughout his pitching career, while striking out five and inducing 13 swings and misses.
In the first at bat of the game, one of his pitches made Brewers history, per ESPN and MLB.com archives. Since such record-keeping began in 2008, Misiorowski’s 102.2 MPH heater to St. Louis leftfielder Lars Nootbaar is the hardest any Milwaukee starter has thrown.
Of 81 total pitches, Misiorowski threw 41 four-seam fastballs, according to ESPN data, at an average of 99.1 MPH. He also relied heavily on his slider, throwing the pitch 24 times (11 curves, 2 changeups). He faced the first batter of the sixth inning, but suffered an awkward stumble that knocked him out of the game. Fortunately, it was not serious – only cramping.
Even opposing manager Oliver Marmol was wowed by Misiorowski’s stuff. “We’ve done a good job this year, guys we haven’t faced and guys just coming up and making their debuts, just taking a good approach,” Marmol said. “But that’s a different arm, man. He did a nice job. The velo is real. The extension is real.”
Leaving with a six-run lead, the 6-foot-7 rookie recorded the win in his first-ever start. Against the rival Cardinals, competing with Milwaukee for the last wild card spot, it was a meaningful W. Now 37-33, the Brewers moved a half-game ahead of St. Louis, assuming second place in the NL central behind Chicago. The Padres remain 2.5 games ahead for in the wild card standings.
Assuming he is free from any nagging injury, Misiorowski is slated to face the Cubs on the road next Wednesday, June 18. With no-hit outing in his debut, he has set the bar pretty high for himself. His 100 MPH fastball versus Chicago’s high-powered offense will be a must-see matchup. If he can get through five more quality innings, the Brewers will take it.
