Mookie Betts Assigns Blame After 5th Straight Loss

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of one of their worst stretches of the season. On Tuesday, the Dodgers dropped their fifth straight game in a 5-1 loss against the Chicago Cubs.

While there are no long-term worries about this club given they are the reigning back-to-back World Series champions, they would certainly like to get back on track as soon as possible. To do so, getting some production from shortstop Mookie Betts would go a long way.

It is no secret that Betts has not been the same player over the past two seasons in the batter's box.

Across 76 appearances this year, Betts has posted a .226 batting average, .283 on-base percentage and .677 OPS, all of which would be career lows. After Tuesday's loss, Betts shouldered the blame when speaking with reporters.

"Just a rut... I just know I need to be better... I'm gonna have to help the team at some point; it's been too long," Betts said. He did not record a hit during Tuesday's game, going 0-for-3.

Betts has consistently shown up for the Dodgers during his seven-year tenure and has helped lead the team to three straight championships. Now at 33 years old, it is fair to wonder whether he can get back to his prime form.

Betts is one of the most accomplished players of his generation as a former MVP, eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger and six-time Gold Glove winner. Even with his diminished production, he is still likely a Hall of Famer when he eventually retires.

For now, though, his focus is on turning it around and being the contributor this team needs as they chase an unprecedented three-peat.
