Make no mistake: the San Diego Padres still have their eyes set on another NL West crown, even after an inconsistent May and losing star pitcher Michael King to a shoulder injury.
It sounds like the Padres are willing to do whatever it takes to overtake the Los Angeles Dodgers, even turning their attention back to a familiar trade target.
According to Padres reporter Dennis Lin, the club is interested in acquiring Boston Red Sox All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran. Lin said the Padres previously "expressed interest" in Duran before the 2024 season.
Duran entered Monday hitting .264 with four home runs, 34 RBI, and a .718 OPS for the fourth-place Red Sox. The 28-year-old remains a potent speed thread, tallying 13 stolen bases and a league-high six triples.
"Whether the Padres possess enough trade capital to acquire Duran — and leave enough resources for other needs — is another question," Lin wrote.
Duran has primarily played left field this season, which understandably appeals to a Padres club desperately needing corner outfield help. Designated hitter Gavin Sheets played left field on Sunday and suffered a head contusion, a sore hip, and a jammed wrist and thumb after running into the wall.
The Padres could also end the Jayson Heyward experiment when he returns from a left oblique strain. Heyward owns a .494 OPS and -0.6 bWAR in 85 plate appearances.
Duran’s numbers are considerably down from last year’s career season, when he posted 8.7 bWAR and led the majors in doubles (48) and triples (14). However, he’s also a 28-year-old outfielder with potentially three seasons of team control remaining.

The Red Sox have an $8 million club option on Duran for 2026, and there is no indication they won’t pick it up. He also has two years of arbitration remaining.
Lin suggested the Padres might include top shortstop prospect Leo De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas in a potential Duran deal. However, he also wrote that “the organization’s farm system has been thinned out over the past few years by a slew of win-now trades.”
San Diego is 33-24 and currently hold the NL's second Wild Card spot, two games behind the slumping Philadelphia Phillies.
