Pete Alonso didn't shy away from responsibility after the Baltimore Orioles suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, taking full blame for a decisive baserunning mistake that ended Baltimore's best chance to win.

The veteran first baseman was doubled off in the bottom of the 10th inning after being caught too far off first base on a line drive, abruptly ending the Orioles' rally before Atlanta secured the victory. Following the game, Alonso accepted responsibility for the costly mistake.

Speaking with reporters, Alonso said the loss was "on me" because of his positioning on the line-drive double play. He also acknowledged that, despite Atlanta's pitching, Baltimore's offense did not do enough to capitalize on its opportunities.

The loss dropped Baltimore to 51-55, leaving the Orioles fourth in the American League East and 10.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays as they continue battling to stay in the postseason race.

Despite the disappointing finish, Alonso contributed offensively throughout the game. The first baseman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his 22nd of the season, while improving his season totals to a .249/.346/.466 slash line with 67 RBIs in 106 games.

The Orioles have faced mounting offensive pressure in recent weeks with catcher Adley Rutschman and top prospect Samuel Basallo both sidelined by injuries. That has placed an even greater burden on veterans like Alonso and Gunnar Henderson to carry the lineup.

Alonso's willingness to shoulder the blame reflected the accountability Baltimore expects from one of its veteran leaders, but it also underscored the club's shrinking margin for error as the trade deadline approaches.

With the Orioles slipping further behind in both the division and Wild Card standings, every missed opportunity carries added weight. Baltimore will look to regroup quickly as it continues searching for consistency during the season's final two months.
