Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto looks to have avoided an extended absence.
Before Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres , interim manager Don Mattingly revealed that Realmuto is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday after suffering a left wrist contusion in Sunday's 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The plan is for the 35-year-old catcher to play both Wednesday and Thursday.
Realmuto was given an off day on Tuesday, with Garrett Stubbs going 0-for-3 in his place.

The veteran catcher suffered the injury during the top of the third inning on Sunday after being hit by a 97 mph fastball by Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Although he initially remained in the game, Realmuto was later replaced by Rafael Marchán in the bottom of the fourth inning.

It's been a brutal series behind the plate for Realmuto, who also took a foul ball off the mask last night and was hit by Ohtani's backswing. pic.twitter.com/TLRgFEhMwR
Realmuto's return is an encouraging sign for the Phillies. Yet, he has struggled significantly at the plate in 2026. In 39 games, he’s slashing .220/.296/.299 with a lackluster .595 OPS. Additionally, he has just two home runs and nine RBI.
Despite his offensive struggles, Realmuto remains one of baseball's most valuable catchers. His Caught Stealing Above Average mark of three ranks in the 96th percentile across the league. Furthermore, his 1.85 pop time is the best among all MLB catchers.
Those elite defensive numbers are simply irreplaceable.
Realmuto's defensive prowess is undeniable. However, Philadelphia needs him to pick things up at the plate if it hopes to become a legitimate contender in a National League loaded with juggernauts like the Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers.
As a whole, the Phillies' offense has struggled over the last two weeks. Philadelphia has not scored five or more runs in a game since May 18 against the Cincinnati Reds. In the 12 games since then, the Phillies are averaging just 2.42 runs per game while posting a 6-6 record.
The recent slump has only magnified what has been a season-long issue. Entering Wednesday, the Phillies are tied for the second-fewest runs scored in the league with just 233. That number is shocking for a lineup filled with star hitters.
Fortunately for Philadelphia, its pitching staff has been downright dominant. Led by Cristopher Sánchez, who has not allowed a run in 44.2 innings, the Phillies have surrendered just 38 runs over their last 12 games.
Without a doubt, Philadelphia's pitching staff has carried the load. Now, Realmuto and the rest of the offense must produce at a higher level to strengthen the team's postseason position.
The Phillies continue their series with San Diego tonight at 6:40 ET with Sánchez looking to extend his scoreless streak.
