Phillies' Rob Thomson Reveals Concerning Injury Update For Bryce Harper

Ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies' first game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, it was announced that first baseman Bryce Harper is dealing with a wrist injury and will miss the game. The news came as a surprise, as Harper had just come back from a different injury, and it seemed as if the Phillies were back healthy.

After the game, in an interview with reporters, Phillies manager Rob Thomson provided an update on Harper's injury. Phillies Postgame Live on NBC Sports Philadelphia shared Thomson's interview, and his answer after being asked for an update on Harper.

"Just treatment," Thomson said. "He's day-to-day. I don't know, we have got to see where he's at when he comes in tomorrow."

Harper's day-to-day designation isn't any surprise, as the Phillies won't place him on the injured list unless it is a long-term injury. He sat out multiple games after getting hit by a pitch and was able to come back before the 10-game limit.

However, this issue might be different. When asked if Harper had any testing done on his wrist, Thomson said, "Not that I know of."

With Thomson uncertain of when Harper will return, and the day-to-day designation placed on him, there is likely mild concern surrounding Harper's wrist issue. His sore right wrist isn't the first time he's dealt with a similar issue.

Near the end of the 2024 season, Harper revealed he had been playing with a sore wrist for a significant portion of the season. The Phillies need Harper badly, with the majority of the offense struggling at the moment. If Harper were to miss extended time, it'd be a huge blow to the Phillies.

But, at the same time, if the Phillies rush him back for June, they could be putting themselves in a bad spot come September and the postseason. Thomson's uncertainty on Harper's injury isn't just about the now, it's also factoring in where the Phillies will be at the end of the year.

This injury update from Thomson doesn't seem like a lot on the surface. But with the unknowns of the injury and the similarities to last season, Thomson and the Phillies could approach it from a different angle.

Harper is day-to-day, and there needs to be more testing done on his wrist to determine the full extent of the injury before he steps back out onto the diamond for the Phillies.
