José Ramírez launched his 11th home run of the season. Gavin Williams took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, guiding the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday and a series win.
Ramírez led off a three-run fourth inning by blasting a slider from Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz (3-7) over the right-center field fence, pushing the Guardians’ lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Nolan Jones delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to cap the frame.
Williams (5-3) was dominant, carrying a no-hit bid through 5 2/3 innings before surrendering a single to Zach Neto. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit and two unearned runs across 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. It marked the first time in his 44 major league starts that he hadn’t allowed a hit through five innings.
Emmanuel Clase closed the game with a clean ninth inning to secure his 13th save.
Mike Trout, not in the starting lineup, entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and contributed an RBI single. Since returning from a knee injury Friday, Trout has gone 5-for-10 in the series.
Ramírez’s leadoff homer in the fourth ignited Cleveland’s biggest inning of the day and proved to be the difference in a game where runs were at a premium.
Ramírez extended his on-base streak to 28 games, during which he’s batting .394 with six homers, 15 RBIs, and a 1.115 OPS since April 30.
Angels: Head to Boston for a three-game series beginning Monday. Tyler Anderson (2-2, 3.39 ERA) will take the mound.
Guardians: Travel to New York to face the Yankees on Tuesday with Tanner Bibee (4-5, 3.86 ERA) set to start the opener.
