Red Sox Offseason Acquisition Set to Make Season Debut

The third and final piece of the Kyle Harrison trade is on his way to Fenway Park.

Anthony Seigler, whom the Boston Red Sox acquired alongside Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio in a trade that sent Harrison, David Hamilton, and Shane Drohan to the Milwaukee Brewers in February, has been called up from Triple-A to join the big league squad on Wednesday. First to report the news was Tommy Cassell of Worcester T&G Sports.

Seigler's promotion serves as a replacement for utilityman Nick Sogard, who has now been placed on the 10-Day injured list after batting through some right side soreness for the last few days.

Sogard's injury popped up over the weekend in Cleveland, when the switch-hitting infielder reported discomfort while hitting left-handed. Combined with the Red Sox riding the hot bats of Durbin and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the infield, the team can afford to be cautious with Sogard's playing time and let him heal up with an IL stint.

Seigler's arrival comes with the added pressure of the deal he came over in. So far, Boston has not seen the kind of production they were expecting from Durbin (.538 OPS) and Monasterio (.656 OPS), while Harrison has been dominant through his first 11 starts as a Brewer by posting a 1.57 ERA with 73 strikeouts.

Seigler appeared in 34 games for the Brewers last season, slashing .194/.292/.210 in limited action while playing third base. Through 30 games for Triple-A Worcester this year, he has fared much better, slashing .298/.425/.471 with three home runs while splitting time at second and third.

The 26-year-old was taken 23rd overall in the first round of the 2018 draft by the New York Yankees as a switch-hitter and switch-pitcher with the ability play infield, outfield, and catch. The unique prospect originally expected to get his break as a catcher, logging over 1,500 minor league innings behind the dish before slowly converting to infield over the past few years in Milwaukee's system but still catching in 24 minor league games in 2025.

The left-handed hitting Seigler will likely figure into the Red Sox's lineup as a platoon option for Durbin at third, but could see time at second base as well in the same capacity as Sogard. With the recent offensive emergence of both Durbin and Kiner-Falefa though, he may not be relied on as much as Sogard was right away.
