Red Sox Star Alex Bregman Expected to Make $80 Million Offseason Decision

Alex Bregman didn't have the market he was hoping for during the 2024-25 free agency class. He landed with the Boston Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million deal, with opt-outs after each season.

For Bregman, 31 years old, having opt-outs in his deal was the right decision. If Bregman has the year he wants, the veteran can hit the free agency market again this winter.

He's currently swinging the bat at a very high level, too, posting a 159 OPS+ with 11 home runs. Bregman is swinging it just as well as he ever has, and if it continues, he should get a big payday.

Looking at the top free agents for next offseason, Yahoo Sports had him at No. 2 in the class, predicting that he'd opt out of his deal.

“Boston recently played a three-game set in Detroit against the Tigers, who Bregman spurned over the offseason. Instead of accepting Detroit’s more traditional long-term offer, Bregman went for Boston’s short-term, high-value, opt-out-laden deal. That’s paid off mightily so far.

"Tigers fans, despite their team’s sensational 2025, did not forget, booing Bregman upon his arrival in the Motor City. That may be a short-sighted decision, considering Bregman looks like a near lock to activate his opt-out and re-enter the market this winter,” Jake Mintz wrote.

Opting out of his deal might not be the biggest issue for the Red Sox. They can bring him back on a long-term contract, or allow Rafael Devers to play third base again.

There are options, and that's what the Red Sox need. However, with how Bregman has played, the hope would be to keep him around.
