A few weeks ago, Kyle Hendricks accepted a role with the Detroit Tigers. It was announced yesterday that Jason Heyward will join the Los Angeles Dodgers front office. The Chicago Cubs reportedly tried to hire both in similar ways, but neither chose the Cubs.

Hendricks and Heyward were both important for the Cubs in their pursuit of the 2016 World Series championship. After a dominant run in the playoffs, Hendricks was the starter in the deciding Game 7. Heyward is credited with gathering the players in the visiting weight room to change the shift in momentum.

Both the Cubs and the Chicago White Sox reached out to Heyward about joining their respective front offices. The Jason Heyward Baseball Academy is located on the Northwest side of Chicago. However, he still chose the Dodgers over both.

Cubs Lose Out on Leadership from Kyle Hendricks and Jason Heyward.

From a fan’s standpoint, Kyle Hendricks and Jason Heyward joining the Cubs organization makes all the sense in the world. However, Hendricks has a great relationship with two former Cubs front office members now leading the way in Detroit. Heyward built a great relationship with many who currently remain in Los Angeles with the Dodgers.

The Cubs have long-term stability currently in the front office. Long-term, though, there could be an opportunity for either to return in a similar role. Specifically, Heyward talked about having aspirations of becoming a general manager or president one day (Subscription Required).

The Tigers and Dodgers will both benefit greatly from the hirings of Hendricks and Heyward. This is just their first run at front office positions, though. There is plenty of time to scoop them up in later years if they can help the franchise.
