Rockies Replace Kyle Freeland After Disappointing Injury News

Freeland’s injury comes after he left his Aug. 19 start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth inning with neck and back discomfort. The 33-year-old attempted to resume throwing over the weekend but was ultimately placed on the injured list, with the move retroactive to Aug. 21.

Freeland has made 23 starts this season, going 4-10 with a 6.37 ERA and 103 strikeouts across 124.1 innings. His absence creates another opening in a Colorado rotation that has struggled throughout the season.

Adams will provide the Rockies with another right-handed option after spending the season between Double-A and Triple-A. The 2022 13th-round pick has posted a 6.52 ERA across 25 minor league appearances this season.

The Rockies are also expected to turn to additional pitching depth as they navigate Freeland’s absence. Right-hander Mason Adams, acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline, could eventually receive an opportunity in the rotation.

For Colorado, the immediate priority is finding enough innings to cover Freeland’s absence while continuing to evaluate its younger arms.
