On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs announced utility pitcher Javier Assad was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa. Assad had been serving time in the bullpen for the Cubs since returning to the main roster earlier this season. However, manager Craig Counsell revealed that this is not a demotion, but rather a preparation for a promotion.
During his pregame time with the media on Sunday, Counsell revealed the plan for Assad is to stretch him out over the next couple of weeks to add him to the rotation as a starter. With Matthew Boyd still recovering from meniscus surgery, depth in the rotation is desperately needed. In a corresponding move, the Cubs selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Ty Blach . Hunter Harvey was also transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Assad has appeared eight times for the Cubs in 2026, starting three times to begin the year. After starting three games, the Cubs moved him to the bullpen, and he was used in short stints. Counsell hinted at Assad’s stint in Iowa being short-term, potentially two weeks.
Javier Assad has a 5.88 earned run average, but do not let that deter you. He gave up nine runs to the Philadelphia Phillies in mid-April and six to the Los Angeles Dodgers a couple of weeks later. Outside of those two appearances, Assad has given up just two earned runs on eight hits in six appearances.
Assad and Ben Brown have both stepped up massively in the wake of catastrophic injuries plaguing the Cubs’ pitching staff. Cade Horton required season-ending surgery; Matthew Boyd needed emergency surgery, too. Assad and Brown have transitioned from depth to assets.
Brown will continue to start; the Cubs appear confident in what they’ve seen from Ty Blach, as well. As Assad stretches out, they will continue to maintain the next-man-up mentality to piece together competitive outings.
