Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s Controversial Comments

In an interview with Veronica Batista, Guerrero said that the $500 million deal he got from Toronto was for what he’s done in the past, not what he will do going forward, while also suggesting that he doesn’t need to have massive home run totals to justify his deal.

“They didn’t pay me to hit 40 every year. They paid me for what I already did. I want people to understand one thing. The money they gave me wasn’t for what I’m going to do. It was for what I already did. They didn’t pay me because I’m going to hit 40 every year. They paid me for what I already accomplished. People are confused about that, but I think the same way they do. Like, sometimes I even say to myself: bro, they gave you all that money and you’re out here doing nothing. I try. You know how it is with fans, when you’re good, they’re with you 100%. But when you smell like (expletive), like we like to say here, nobody supports you. The ones who support you are the ones who stay with you. Those are my fans. My family,” Guerrero said in the interview.

As one can guess, these comments did not sit well with Blue Jays fans, who were shocked Guerrero would say the quiet part out loud.

It was obvious to anyone who paid attention to the Blue Jays this year that Guerrero wasn’t trying his best, and with this kind of attitude, now we know that’s exactly the case.

There is no way Toronto’s front office can be happy with him saying this, as it’s just the absolute worst thing to say after the team missed out on the playoffs.

More troubling was that, after the game against Baltimore, Guerrero was given the chance to clarify his comments, and he doubled down on them, saying it was his opinion and he was entitled to it.

Just completely tone-deaf from Guerrero, especially on a day like today, when Toronto’s playoff hopes were dashed.
