The Cincinnati Reds clinched the last playoff berth in the National League last year to end their postseason drought. However, Elly De La Cruz played a subdued role for the team by his elite standards, with the superstar shortstop playing through the campaign with a leg injury. Despite the pain, De La Cruz was in the lineup for every game the Reds played last year.
Elly De La Cruz came off the field in the fifth inning of the 6-4 victory for the Cincinnati Reds over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. After hitting a line drive to the right center field wall for an easy extra-base hit, he seemingly pulled his right hamstring while rounding first base. The trainer had examined De La Cruz before removing him from the field.

“When I was making the turn to get to first, I felt tightness in my hamstring and immediately decided to stop because I felt like if I kept going, it could get worse,” he told reporters, via interpreter Tomas Vera.
De La Cruz is batting .280/.346/.509 for the season with 12 home runs and a 133 OPS+ besides leading the Reds lineup with 2.3 bWAR. Meanwhile, the Reds moved up to 30-28 for the season but still lie 8.0 games behind the leaders in the NL Central.
The Cincinnati Reds announced Elly De La Cruz will undergo an MRI scan on Monday morning to assess the extent of the right hamstring injury. The two-time All-Star feels the issue should not be a major one, but he could still miss the next few games for the Reds.
“I don’t believe it is something bad. I really don’t,” De La Cruz said. “We’ll see what the MRI says tomorrow. I don’t feel that bad– I don’t know if I’ll be playing tomorrow. I don’t like to be out of the game.”
The injury is likely to bring an end to his run of 276 consecutive games played. He played at least 160 games in his first two full seasons for the Reds and all 58 games so far this year.
