White Sox acquire defensive wiz in Brenton Doyle

Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz has already been busy ahead of Monday's 6 PM EST trade deadline, adding Luis Castillo in a trade with the Mariners and addressing the bullpen in a deal with the Mets. 

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, the Colorado Rockies are sending outfielder Brenton Doyle to the White Sox in exchange for right-hander Mason Adams and shortstop Carlos Vielma (h/t Mark Feinsand of MLB.com). The deal is pending a medical review, as Doyle had been on the injured list with a left oblique contusion since May 21. 

The 28-year-old Doyle had struggled offensively before landing on the injured list, slashing .214/.287/.282 (a 51 OPS+). Doyle was activated off the IL on Friday.

Doyle has been among the best defensive center fielders in the game in recent years, winning Gold Glove Awards in 2023 and 2024. His addition only strengthens Chicago's outfield defensive mix. 

Primarily a center fielder -- Doyle has never played another position in his four years in the big leagues -- manager Will Venable will face a tough decision on how to align the outfield. Sam Antonnaci's versatility could allow him to see more time at second base, which would let All-Star Tristan Peters slide over to left so that Doyle can man center field. 

The move from the large confines of Coors Field to Chicago's Rate Field could prove beneficial for Doyle from an offensive standpoint, too. 

With the potential for three additional seasons of team control and Chicago's recent track record with hitters -- shortstop Colson Montgomery was struggling at the plate in 2025 before working with director of hitting Ryan Fuller to transform his swing -- Doyle could see a change in how he approaches at-bats.

While not parting with any of their top-ranked prospects, Chicago does dip into their minor league depth to add Doyle. Adams has pitched well across three levels this season, with a 3.86 ERA in 14 games (12 starts). MLB Pipeline ranked him as the White Sox's No. 8 prospect before the deal. 

Vielma is a 16-year-old shortstop signed as an international amateur free agent this past January. He has hit .337/.507/.474 in 95 at-bats in the Dominican Summer League.
