White Sox Clinch Stunning Playoff Berth

It is certainly one of the most stunning franchise turnarounds in recent Major League Baseball memory, led by second-year manager Will Venable. Chicago entered this year coming off three straight 100+ loss seasons, including a record-worst 121 losses in 2024. But after clinching a playoff spot, the White Sox became the first team in Major League history to reach the postseason after three straight 100-loss campaigns.

The White Sox have relied heavily on their young offensive players. One example is Japanese phenom Munetaka Murakami, whom the ballclub signed to a two-year, $34 million deal in the offseason. Safe to say that move paid off.

Despite batting .204 in 123 games this season, Murakami has slugged 33 home runs and driven in 74 runs. The 26-year-old’s rookie campaign also saw him become the first player in White Sox history and just the fourth player in MLB history to homer in each of the first three games of his career.

Another star in the making for Chicago this season has been third baseman Miguel Vargas. In 157 games this season, Vargas is slashing .252/.363/.479 with 33 homers, 92 RBI and an OPS of .842. The 26-year-old was also selected to his first All-Star Game.

Overall, the White Sox rank sixth in the major leagues with 203 home runs this season.

Chicago’s pitching staff has also been stellar for them this year. Sean Burke, Davis Martin, Bryan Hudson, and Grant Taylor have helped lead the White Sox to the eighth-best team ERA in the American League at 4.13.

While they’re in the postseason, the job isn’t quite done. The White Sox can still clinch the AL Central, as they remain just a half-game behind the Cleveland Guardians.

The Guardians finish the series with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday and close out their regular season this weekend against the aforementioned Royals. The White Sox finish their regular season slate with a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.
