The Chicago White Sox defeated the Texas Rangers on Saturday for the second straight game. Now 17-35 on the season, Chicago remains in last place in the American League Central standings, but is slightly improved from last season's historically bad 41-121 finish.
One of the more disappointing developments in Chicago the last two seasons has been Luis Robert Jr.'s career trajectory. An All-Star in 2023, Robert has been steadily declining. His .657 OPS last season was below league average, and it has dropped to .592 this season.
Because the White Sox have been well out of postseason contention in recent years, Robert has often come up in trade rumors.
In 2023, Robert could have fetched quite the haul. But after two straight down years, that is no longer the case. Earlier this week, Jon Heyman of the New York Post said on a Bleacher Report stream that Robert is unlikely to be traded this season due to his poor production and $15 million salary ($20 club option in 2026).
Following this news, the White Sox released outfielder Oscar Colas, per the team's Triple-A affiliate. Yet to make an MLB appearance this season, Colas owns a .553 OPS in 93 minor league at-bats between Double-A and Triple-A.
ROSTER MOVES: Prior to the start of this evening's game vs. Round Rock, the Charlotte Knights have made the following roster moves:
— Charlotte Knights (@KnightsBaseball) May 24, 2025
- INF Andrew Vaughn sent from the Chicago White Sox to Charlotte
- OF Oscar Colas released from Charlotte
- P Dan Altavilla released from…
If Robert was on his way out of Chicago, perhaps there would be a path to big league playing time for Colas. He showed some flashes of ability in 13 games last season, hitting .273 with four RBIs. While those numbers do not jump off the page, Chicago's outfield production has been among the worst in baseball (h/t FanGraphs).
