White Sox Make Trade Ahead of Yankees Series

The Chicago White Sox strengthened their organizational pitching depth Monday by acquiring right-hander José Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league reliever Félix Doroteo. The move comes just before Chicago opens a four-game home series against the New York Yankees.

Rather than joining the major league roster immediately, Urquidy was added to the White Sox's 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. In a separate transaction, outfielder Junior Perez was optioned to Triple-A one day after hitting a two-run home run in Chicago's 12-3 victory over the Houston Astros.

The White Sox entered the week with a 55-49 record, holding a 2.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians atop the American League Central.

Urquidy brings valuable postseason experience after spending most of his major league career with the Houston Astros, where he pitched in three World Series. The 31-year-old was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh before Chicago completed the trade, giving the White Sox experienced upper-level pitching depth without immediately altering their active roster.

Doroteo heads to the Pirates after posting a 4.50 ERA over 18.0 relief innings in the Arizona Complex League this season. Chicago, meanwhile, adds a veteran arm capable of providing rotation or bullpen depth as the season enters its final two months.

The move follows a productive weekend for Chicago, which finished its series against Houston with an offensive outburst before turning its attention to New York. While bigger deadline moves could still be ahead, the White Sox prioritized strengthening their organizational pitching depth.

Chicago now begins its series against the Yankees looking to maintain its division lead while relying on a deepening pool of pitching options.
