Robert Murray of FanSided reported that the Chicago White Sox have signed outfielder Joshua Palacios to a minor league contract. Palacios elected free agency after being outrighted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 29-year-old outfielder was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Auburn University. He broke into the big leagues in 2021 with the Blue Jays, followed by a brief stint with the Washington Nationals the following year. He spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh and played 91 games for the Bucs in 2023, posting a .692 OPS.

Depth

He has spent the majority of the last four seasons in the minor leagues, where he posted a 131 WRC+ over 781 plate appearances. He performed well in that span but never replicated that success at the major league level. Palacios is out of minor league options, which led to the Pirates outrighting him off their 40-man roster.

The White Sox currently have a crowded outfield mix that includes Luis Robert Jr., Andrew Benintendi, Travis Jankowski, Austin Slater, and Michael A. Taylor. Offseason acquisition Mike Tauchman is on a rehab assignment and will return shortly. Several of these outfielders are expected to be available in midseason trade talks.

What's On Tap Next?

If the White Sox move pieces as expected, Palacios could earn a call-up later in the season. In the meantime, he will join Greg Jones, Dominic Fletcher, Corey Julks, Oscar Colás, and Zach DeLoach at Triple-A Charlotte, competing for another shot at the big leagues.
