The New York Mets are going through a torrid spell in the opening phase of the 2026 campaign. Their playoff hopes look slim despite having the highest payroll in the MLB. With almost nothing to lose, the Mets are promoting their top prospects, hoping it can get them out of the doldrums. Zack Thornton is the latest product from their farm system set for his major league debut.
On Wednesday night, Zack Thornton will be the starting pitcher for the New York Mets in Game 3 of their series against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field. The 24-year-old left-hander is a natural strike-thrower who is taking big strides forward this year. He replaces Clay Holmes in the Mets rotation, with the latter joining the 60-day IL.

“Thornton, who has endeared himself to Mets officials in part because of his ability to throw strikes, is receiving the first shot at filling the vacancy created by Clay Holmes’ fractured right fibula,” Mike Puma of The New York Post reported.
“In seven minor league starts this season, he has pitched to a 3.16 ERA. Thornton appeared twice for the team in the Grapefruit League and left a positive impression on manager Carlos Mendoza.”
Zack Thornton was the fifth-round pick for the Mets out of Grand Canyon University at the 2023 MLB Draft. He got the nod over Jack Wenninger and Jonah Tong at Triple-A Syracuse. New York also has Sean Manaea and Tobias Myers as their other starting pitching options on the active roster.
Standing at 6’3″ and 170 pounds, Zack Thornton does not have an overbearing physical presence to be a power pitcher. He believes having a strong command of his pitches and competitiveness on the field are his biggest assets.
Zach Thornton says he and his father teared up "immediately" when he called him to tell him he would be promoted to the Mets:

“I’m not the biggest guy in the world,” Zack Thornton told The New York Post on Tuesday. “I treat every game the same: I want to go out and compete,” Thornton said. “I am the ultimate competitor, a strike thrower.”
Zack Thorton is ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the Mets franchise and the fifth highest among pitchers. He is the second Mets prospect to make his MLB debut in as many weeks after A.J. Ewing.
