Why Braves-Mets game was postponed on Tuesday

On Monday, the New York Mets got off to a strong start to their series against the Atlanta Braves with a resounding 14-3 win over the divisional rivals. The Mets were hoping to build off that momentum in Tuesday evening’s game between the two teams, but unfortunately, that will have to wait.

“Tonight’s game has been postponed. It will be made up as a split doubleheader tomorrow, July 29, at 1:10pm & 7:10pm,” announced the Mets’ official team account on X, formerly Twitter, also noting that the reason for the postponement was due to weather.

A quick look at the New York City area forecast indeed shows rain and storms pummeling the area throughout the day and night on Tuesday, so it’s no surprise that the Mets were proactive and opted to postpone this game well in advance, before fans had to get stuck in traffic wondering whether or not the game would be played.

Despite Monday’s triumph, the Mets are still firmly behind the eight ball in the NL playoff race, currently sitting at 45-62 on the season, 17.5 games below the Braves for first place in the NL East. Meanwhile, Atlanta has cooled off a bit after their hot start to the season, but the Braves still sit with a record of 62-44 on the season.

With all of their struggles, many anticipate that the Mets could hold a fire sale at the upcoming MLB trade deadline, which is set for August 3.

In any case, fans will get their next look at both teams when the first game of the doubleheader gets underway on Wednesday afternoon in Queens.
