The New York Mets claimed infielder Yolmer Sánchez off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. In a corresponding move, catcher Patrick Mazeika was designated for assignment, the team announced.
The catcher spent a little under a month on the IL. The Mets have activated catcher James McCann from the injured list and optioned fellow catcher Patrick Mazeika to Triple-A Syracuse.
Patrick Mazeika had a roller coaster game, but came through with the game winning solo homer in the seventh, putting the Mets back in the win column. The Mets eked by Seattle by a score of 5-4, and the game was every bit of a up and down affair as one would imagine.
McCann hits the IL slashing .196/.266/.286 with one home run and six RBI on the season, so the hope is this procedure will ultimately help him reclaim his best form at the plate.
Whether the Mets explore trade scenarios seems likely to come down to how the organization feels about McCann after an underwhelming first season in Queens.
