Charles Oliveira Vs. Mateusz Gamrot Breakdown

Charles Oliveira returns to the Octagon to face Mateusz Gamrot in a lightweight clash this weekend, as we look at how the fight could play out.

Oliveira has a point to prove following his last appearance, where he suffered a devastating first-round knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June, ending his bid to reclaim the vacant Lightweight Championship. Oliveira neglected his world-class submission game to stand and exchange with a knockout artist, a choice that cost him dearly. Gamrot stepped up on short notice after Rafael Fiziev withdrew due to injury, but the Polish contender is in excellent form. Gamrot’s last performance was a dominant victory over Ludovit Klein in May. Here is how the fight could play out.

The Approach

For Oliveira, the path to victory must be a return to his world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a weapon he controversially neglected in his last fight. Oliveira holds the UFC record for most submission wins, and his guard is arguably the most dangerous in the sport. His strategy should involve using his striking as bait to draw Gamrot into a grappling exchange, or immediately forcing the fight to the ground. Even if he ends up on his back, Oliveira should actively hunt submissions, rather than attempting to stand up, knowing that Gamrot is notoriously difficult to submit but can be frustrated and exposed by constant threats from the bottom.

Gamrot’s strategy will be straightforward: neutralize the striking and tire Charles with his wrestling. The Polish contender is known for his relentless pace, wrestling, and suffocating top control, a style that was dominant in his last win over Ludovit Klein. Gamrot should utilize a high volume of takedown attempts from the start, not necessarily to hold Oliveira down, but to force him to spend energy defending.
