UFC stars Chris Curtis and Sean Strickland recently met with Nevada State Athletic Commission officials after storming the cage.
Chris Curtis and Sean Strickland went viral after they stormed the cage to confront a trash-talking fighter who beat one of their teammates at Tuff-N-Uff 145 last month. After Luis Hernandez taunted Strickland and Curtis from inside the cage, Strickland and Curtis confronted him, and Strickland threw a few punches at Hernandez before security intervened.
It was a chaotic scene for all involved, including Curtis, just weeks before his win at UFC Nashville last Saturday. But concerns regarding potential punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for Curtis and Strickland quickly made the rounds.
Hernandez, in the hours after the incident, surprisingly defended Strickland and Curtis against potential punishment from NSAC. Despite Hernandez’s plea, Strickland and Curtis paid a steep price for their actions at Tuff-N-Uff 145.
In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Curtis explained how his and Strickland’s recent meetings with NSAC played out after they charged the cage.
“We had some very interesting meetings with [NSAC],” Curtis said.
“Nevada did kind of come down on us. It’s one of those things where they understand how the situation got out of hand, but they also said that it was unacceptable. So I got a punishment for it, Sean got punished for it, so at that point, you have to take your lickings and you can’t really argue.
“Yeah, we had a f— up. But we could’ve made different choices. So I’m not mad about it at all…I ended up paying a decent little penny for it. I got a fine, Sean got some other stuff, which I’ll let him tell people about that at some point, I’m not going to out his personal business. But I got an interesting fine,” Curtis continued.
“I’m not barred from cornering, mine was a bit different from Sean’s. I’m fine, they just got me with a nice little fine.”
As of this writing, Strickland hasn’t publicly disclosed a potential suspension from NSAC after the incident. Strickland hasn’t fought since a middleweight title rematch loss to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 312, and remains unbooked for his next fight.
Curtis defeated Max Griffin at UFC Nashville last Saturday in his return to the UFC’s welterweight division. In the interview referenced above, Curtis called out Vicente Luque, but his teammate’s return timeline remains a mystery.
Strickland has been recently linked to a potential rematch with Israel Adesanya for both former titleholders’ next fight. Adesanya was finished by Nassourdine Imavov earlier this year and called out Strickland during an interview on the UFC Hall of Fame red carpet.
Strickland’s last victory came against former title challenger Paulo Costa at UFC 302 last year. He’s lost two of his last three fights.
As for what’s next for Curtis, he could potentially return by year’s end against Luque in a matchup between two welterweight vets.
