Dustin Poirier couldn’t miss a shot to make fun of Conor McGregor as their years-long war of words continued.
McGregor and Poirier first battled it out back in 2014, with the American infamously getting so wound up by his rival’s poking that he declared he had never hated an opponent more. The Irishman won within seconds, before moving on to winning world titles at featherweight and lightweight.
It took seven years for the pair to meet again, with Poirier scoring a stunning knockout in their rematch at UFC 257. They had a particularly ugly build-up to their UFC 264 trilogy which ended in the most gruesome fashion imaginable as McGregor suffered a broken leg that saw him sidelined for five years.
Since retiring from the sport, Dustin Poirier has refused to settle his feud with Conor McGregor even after an olive branch was offered following the birth of his daughter. The former lightweight interim champion has often been branded a ‘sore winner’ for his reactions to some famous victories.
On the latest episode of Paramount’s Deep Waters podcast with Jorge Masvidal, ‘The Diamond’ had the chance to give his take on McGregor’s comeback fight against his old opponent Max Holloway. Poirier has shared the cage five times with the two men in the UFC 329 main event.
As a result, his analysis was particularly interesting, albeit after he took a little shot at McGregor. When Chris Weidman noted that the former two-weight world champion was ‘sleeping in the gym’ to prepare for the event, Poirier let loose.
“Speaking of sleeping,” Poirier began, before drawing roaring laughter in the studio by hitting the punchline: “Conor McGregor, I put you to sleep in Abu Dhabi, bud! Sleepy Mac.”
