Max Holloway won the Knockout of the Year award for knocking out Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. Meanwhile, Gaethje had also previously lost a big title fight against Charles Oliveira. As he faces Ilia Topuria at the White House card, he aims to get this win to make a statement.

The lightweight interim champion believed a victory over ‘El Matador’ would be the biggest win of his career and help erase the disappointment of his losses to Holloway and Oliveira. During his recent interview with TMZ Sports, the 37-year-old said:

“I was 17-0 at one point when I got to the UFC. Ilia is much more accomplished at 17-0 than I was, there’s no doubt. This kid is special, but this sport is so crazy. With this win, I get to take away the Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira fights.”

Gaethje praised Topuria’s undefeated run and acknowledged how accomplished the lightweight champion already is. The Spanish fighter had already built a strong legacy that many MMA stars and fans compare directly to Conor McGregor.

Justin Gaethje Believes Ilia Topuria Is Following The Same Path As Conor McGregor

Topuria’s confidence is something else. Inside the octagon, outside it, doesn’t matter. With the UFC White House card around the corner, Gaethje has been watching closely. And what he sees in Topuria reminds him a lot of a younger Conor McGregor.

As per him, he has that same swagger, that same belief that the whole sport was about to bend around him. Everyone knows how that story went. During his recent interview with TMZ Sports, the ‘The Highlight’ said:

“This is how Ilia approaches many of his fights. He’s been successful every time along the way. It’s similar to how McGregor approached fights. You make yourself out to be this unbeatable, infallible person, and then when you lose, where do you go from there? I can’t wait to teach him that lesson.”

Gaethje pointed to Topuria’s supreme confidence and undefeated run, saying the lightweight champion had built an aura of being unbeatable. Meanwhile, many believed “El Matador” had not been fully tested yet, as he had not shown his wrestling side. Many also believed wrestling could be the key to defeating the Spanish fighter.
