Throughout his career, Ilia Topuria has consistently drawn comparisons to Conor McGregor.

This coming June 14, Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje clash in the UFC White House main event for the undisputed lightweight title.

Ahead of their historic clash, Gaethje’s dad has confidently predicted that ‘The Highlight’ will pick up the win against the Spaniard, claiming that he has already mastered beating ‘small guys’.

Those comments didn’t sit well with ‘El Matador’ who issued his response saying that he will get a lesson in humility when he beats Gaethje on the White House lawn.

Gaethje says Topuria is going down a similar path to Conor McGregor

Throughout his rise in the UFC, Topuria has consistently drawn comparisons to Conor McGregor due to things like his confidence and personality.

And now just a few weeks out from their clash in Washington D.C. ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje has stated that he thinks Topuria is going down the same path that McGregor went down, which will lead to his downfall.

“This is how he approaches many of his fights,” Gaethje told TMZ Sports in regards to Topuria’s confidence heading into their clash.

Earlier this week, Topuria sent the MMA world wild when he placed a ‘special’ white rose on a mural of Gaethje during part of his pre-fight promo.

“He’s been successful every time along the way. Again, it’s similar to McGregor and how McGregor approached fights. You’re gonna make yourself this unbeatable, infallible person and then when you lose, where do you go from there?

“I can’t wait to teach him that lesson, I’ve been there before. I was 17-0 at one point when I got to the UFC, he’s much more accomplished at 17-0 than I was. There’s no doubt this kid is special but this sport is so crazy,” he continued.

For a few years now, Gaethje has spoken openly about his impending retirement, with this potentially being the final fight of his career.

“With this win I get to take away the Max Holloway fight and the Charles Oliveira fight,” Gaethje said.

If the 37-year-old is able to pull off the ultimate upset, it is unlikely that he would walk away from the sport while on top, however, if he is handed his third undisputed title loss, it could be the final time we see ‘The Highlight’ in the sport.
