Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier will meet this Saturday in the main event of UFC 318 for the symbolic BMF title. The hype surrounding this fight is absolutely massive, with fans excited to see two all-action fighters go to war again. However, despite the UFC promoting the BMF belt extensively, heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has publicly expressed doubts about the title’s legitimacy.
Holloway won the BMF title last year after knocking out Justin Gaethje at the historic UFC 300 event. Since claiming the belt, this will be Holloway’s first time defending the BMF title. In a recent UFC on TNT interview, Tom Aspinall shared his honest thoughts about the upcoming fight and the BMF title.
You want my honest opinion. It’s a title, but it’s not a world championship. So, what are we doing? These guys don’t need a title. They are two legends of the Sport. We don’t really need a title on the line.

The UFC first introduced the BMF title in 2019, specifically for Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, two fan-favorite fighters. It was created to celebrate fighters known for toughness, entertainment, and warrior spirit rather than traditional rankings or title contention. UFC marketed the BMF belt as a special attraction, with The Rock even presenting the title, creating huge mainstream buzz.

However, confusion exists because the BMF title lacks rankings implications or division status, making fans question its true sporting significance. Despite debates, UFC continues pushing BMF title fights, capitalizing on fan interest and promoting thrilling matchups between legendary all-action fighters.
Max Holloway’s trademark ‘stand and bang’ move showcases fearless striking, inviting opponents to trade punches during intense, electrifying octagon exchanges. He immortalized this move at UFC 300 by confidently calling out Justin Gaethje, delivering brutal strikes in an unforgettable finale. The incredible moment instantly went viral, with fans praising Holloway’s warrior spirit.
During UFC 308, Ilia Topuria invited Holloway to ‘stand and bang’ immediately, but Holloway wisely refused and stayed cautious (although he was knocked out later). However, Holloway recently said if Dustin Poirier invites him this weekend, he’ll accept the challenge and engage without hesitation. In a new MMA Fighting interview, Holloway explained his mindset, promising fans thrilling exchanges and absolute fireworks.
With Dustin, he’s a point down guy, too. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he started it, if he initiated it. If we get to the fifth round with the 10 seconds left, I think he might beat me to it and point down first… You and I know we live in a sport where moments are king. If I can go out there and I can have a UFC 300 moment again, come here July 19, who’s to say I’m not right there for an undisputed title shot again.

Holloway knows he’ll be Poirier’s final opponent before retirement, understanding the significance of this special career-ending matchup. He feels tremendous responsibility and has vowed to give Poirier an unforgettable send-off, regardless of whether he wins or loses. This fight also offers Holloway a golden chance to finally avenge his two tough previous losses against Poirier inside the octagon.
