
A former Daytona 500 winner was fastest in the second practice session for Sunday's Daytona 500.
Austin Dillon paced NASCAR Cup Series practice on Friday afternoon, turning in a fastest lap of 46.006 seconds in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Dillon's RCR teammate, Kyle Busch will start on the pole for the Daytona 500, while Dillon will start the "Great American Race" in seventh.
Eleven of the top-12 drivers were from the Chevrolet camp, with the first Ford being Josh Berry in 11th and the first Toyota being Christopher Bell in 21st.
Alex Bowman, Justin Allgaier, Chase Elliott and 2023 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top-five, with Shane van Gisbergen, two-time defending 500 winner William Byron, Ross Chastain, defending Cup Series champion Kyle Larson and rookie Connor Zilisch completing the top-10.
Other notable practice results include Brad Keselowski in 15th, Ryan Blaney in 16th, 2015 500 winner Joey Logano in 17th, Bell in 21st and Busch in 23rd.
BJ McLeod was the slowest driver of the 37 who made a lap. Four drivers — Ryan Preece, AJ Allmendinger, Cody Ware and Casey Mears — did not make a lap in practice.
Byron, Chris Buescher and Chastain all made their first laps with their backup cars on Friday after their vehicles sustained damage in Thursday's duel races.
Final practice for the Daytona 500 will take place at 3 p.m. ET Saturday, with coverage on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. The 68th running of the Daytona 500 will begin shortly after 2:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on Fox, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
