NASCAR legend and Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon didn't hesitate when talking about Kyle Larson's plans for this Sunday.
Larson will compete in the 109th Running of the Indy 500 this Sunday. He's hoping to shock the world at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and then head over to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600.
Qualifying for the Indy 500 wasn't easy for Larson despite having some experience under his belt. Although he'll start 21st, he's just grateful to have a chance at winning "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."
"We're in the race," Larson said, via Fox Sports. "After the first run, I was a little bit nervous I'd be one of the guys battling for the final spots. … It was slightly less comfortable than what I felt last year what I felt in qualifying. I felt pretty balanced. I was happy with that."
Regardless if he wins or loses, Larson will have to make it to Charlotte in time for the driver intros. At least that's what Gordon told him this Saturday.
Gordon spoke to the media Saturday about Hendrick Motorsports' outlook for the Coca-Cola 600. They're obviously banking on a strong performance from Larson tomorrow night. That won't happen if he's not locked in at Charlotte.
That being said, Gordon expects Larson to prioritize the Coca-Cola 600 over the Indy 500.
"Jeff Gordon again reiterates that Kyle Larson’s priority tomorrow is the Coca-Cola 600 and he will be at Charlotte for driver intros," Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic said.
Interestingly enough, Larson has been excused from driver intros for Sunday's race. Is he willing to get on Gordon's bad side though? I guess we'll find out soon.
Larson has been outstanding this season, picking up victories at Miami, Bristol and Kansas. Though it's not really a surprise, he's currently first in the Cup Series standings.
Hendrick Motorsports is hoping Larson will keep his foot on the gas this Sunday night in Charlotte.
