Rob Schumacher-Imagn Images

We are still able to witness some of the greatest small forwards ever including The King, LeBron James, and two-time NBA champion Kawhi Leonard, compete at a high level in the current landscape of the NBA. Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season and following our breakdown of the 25 best shooting guards., we have collected the list of the 25 best small forwards in the NBA according to their natural positions.

1. LeBron James

Credit: Jason Parkhurst-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 25.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 8.3 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.5 BPG

LeBron James continues to defy age and expectations, solidifying his position as one of the best players in the NBA even at 39 years old. His 2023-24 season statistics of 25.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG, and 8.3 APG demonstrate his all-around game and ability to impact every facet of the game. We haven't seen a player be this great for as long as James has.

The Lakers, with LeBron at the helm, are always in contention for a playoff spot, if not more. His ability to elevate the play of those around him is evident as he integrates new players and develops young talent. Despite concerns about durability given his age, LeBron has managed to stay relatively healthy, continuing to perform at an MVP-caliber level. Heading into 2024-25, he will be the best small forward in the NBA until he proves otherwise.

2. Kawhi Leonard

Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 23.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.9 BPG

Kawhi Leonard, appearing in 68 games, had a strong season with the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 23.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 3.6 APG. His efficiency on both ends of the floor makes him a formidable force, combining a strong mid-range game with an ability to lock down opposing stars. Unfortunately, Leonard was almost unavailable in the postseason with only two appearances.

The Clippers' hopes of making a deep playoff run hinge significantly on Leonard's availability and health. While injuries have been a concern in recent years, a healthy Kawhi remains one of the most impactful two-way players in the league. His presence alone elevates the Clippers to a championship-contending level, especially if James Harden returns to an All-NBA level as well.

3. Jaylen Brown

Credit: Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 23.0 PPG, 5.5. RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.2 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Jaylen Brown's 2023-24 season for the Boston Celtics saw him average 23.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, and 3.6 APG in the regular season before capturing his first NBA title and Finals MVP award. Brown's athleticism, combined with his improved shooting and ball-handling, makes him a difficult matchup for opposing defenders.

Brown's growth has been crucial for the Celtics as they navigate the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference. His ability to complement Jayson Tatum while also carrying the scoring load on any given night provides the Celtics with a dynamic 1-2 punch. As Boston continues to contend for championships, Brown’s role as a cornerstone of the team becomes even more pivotal and the star has a chance to win back-to-back titles.

4. Jimmy Butler

Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 20.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 5.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Jimmy Butler remains one of the league's best competitors, known for his ability to take over games, especially in crucial moments. He is often the engine that drives the Heat's offense, using his high basketball IQ and physicality to dominate mismatches and attack the rim. Heading into 2024-25, there will be questions about whether Butler wants to stay in Miami or not.

The Heat's culture of toughness and grit is embodied by Butler, whose leadership qualities have helped Miami maintain its competitive edge in a crowded Eastern Conference. Even when his scoring numbers dip, Butler's presence on the floor is felt in numerous other ways, so it will be interesting to see if the superstar can focus on proving Pat Riley and the Heat organization that he is still one of the best players in the world.

5. Paul George

2023-24 Season Statistics: 22.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Paul George has had a strong season with the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 22.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 3.5 APG, but his era with the franchise is over. George remains one of the most versatile wings in the game and he hopes to form a successful Big Three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Once again, George finds himself alongside other star players, and winning an NBA title is the ultimate goal.

The 76ers will be able to rely on George to deliver in big moments, especially during the regular season if Joel Embiid's availability likely comes into question. His ability to shoulder the scoring load while also facilitating the offense makes him an invaluable asset and the 76ers will pray for health across the board for their star players.

6. Scottie Barnes

Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 19.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 6.1 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.5 BPG

Scottie Barnes had a breakout year for the Toronto Raptors in 2023-24, posting averages of 19.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, and 6.1 APG. The young forward's growth in his third season has been a bright spot for the Raptors, as he has developed into a versatile player who can contribute across the board. His playmaking ability from the forward position is particularly noteworthy, allowing the Raptors to run their offense through him at times.

Barnes' emergence as a star for the Raptors is pivotal for their future as they look to build around a young core that also features RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. His ability to impact the game in so many ways, from scoring to rebounding to distributing, makes him a unique talent. As he continues to refine his jump shot and grow more comfortable as a primary option, Barnes is set to climb even higher among the league's top small forwards.

7. Brandon Ingram

Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 20.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 5.7 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Brandon Ingram continues to be a key piece for the New Orleans Pelicans, averaging 20.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 5.7 APG in the 2023-24 season. Ingram's offensive versatility is his biggest asset, as he can score from nearly anywhere on the court. His length allows him to shoot over defenders easily, and his improved playmaking skills have made him a more well-rounded threat.

Ingram's role on the Pelicans extends beyond just scoring; he is also relied upon for leadership and playmaking, especially in the absence of other key players due to injuries. As the Pelicans continue to build toward the future, Ingram's ability to be a versatile wing who can facilitate offense and defend at a high level makes him a critical component of their plans. In the case Ingram doesn't perform as expected, we might be seeing trade rumors start floating because his value is high right now as a 27-year-old.

8. Mikal Bridges

2023-24 Season Statistics: 19.6 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Mikal Bridges will prove to be a spectacular pickup for the New York Knicks after the swingman averaged 19.6 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 3.6 APG. Known initially for his defensive prowess, Bridges has taken a leap offensively, becoming a reliable scoring option for the Nets and hopefully for the Knicks next year.

On defense, Bridges remains one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, capable of locking down multiple positions with his length and agility. As he continues to expand his offensive game, Bridges is solidifying his place among the league's elite small forwards and he could be a difference-maker alongside Jalen Brunson, Julius Randle, and OG Anunoby for the Knicks in 2024-25.

9. DeMar DeRozan

2023-24 Season Statistics: 24.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.6 BPG

DeMar DeRozan's 2023-24 season with the Chicago Bulls was another testament to his scoring prowess and playmaking ability, as he averaged 24.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Now a member of the Sacramento kings, DeRozan remains one of the league's premier mid-range scorers, using his footwork, ball-handling, and ability to create space to consistently get to his spots on the floor.

While DeRozan's offensive game is largely based on mid-range shots and slashing to the basket, he has also improved as a facilitator, as indicated by his 5.3 assists per game. The Kings will rely on DeRozan's offensive skills to help take the core of De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis to another level.

10. Jalen Williams

Credit: Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 19.1 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 4.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Jalen Williams had a breakout season with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2023-24, averaging 19.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. As a second-year player, Williams showed significant improvement in his scoring efficiency, shooting, and overall impact on both ends of the floor.

Known for his versatility, Williams can handle the ball, facilitate, and score, making him a valuable asset in the Thunder's young and dynamic roster. His ability to read the game, create off the dribble, and finish at the rim has provided OKC with another offensive weapon alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. Expect Williams to be in contention for his first All-Star appearance for the title-contending Thunder in 2024-25.

11. Khris Middleton

Credit: Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.1 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 5.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Khris Middleton's 2023-24 season saw him average 15.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Despite his scoring numbers dipping from his peak seasons, Middleton remains a critical piece for the Milwaukee Bucks due to his versatile offensive skills and defensive leadership. His ability to create his own shot and his proficiency in mid-range scoring and three-point shooting keep him as a formidable scoring option alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.

However, Middleton's ranking at this stage is influenced by his declining athleticism and injuries that have limited his impact. The Bucks rely on his presence on both ends of the floor, but his defensive impact has waned slightly due to these physical setbacks. Unless Middleton drops off significantly next season, we don't anticipate him being considered less than a top-15 wing in the league.

12. Franz Wagner

Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 19.7 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.4 BPG

Franz Wagner's 2023-24 season statistics—19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game—highlight his growing role as a key figure for the Orlando Magic alongside star Paolo Banchero. Wagner's versatility on the offensive end, combining shooting, driving, and playmaking, makes him a difficult matchup for defenders.

He has shown tremendous improvement in his three-point shooting and is increasingly adept at finishing through contact. His ability to play both forward positions allows Orlando to utilize him in various lineup configurations, making him an invaluable asset for the team's future.

13. Michael Porter Jr.

Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 16.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.7 BPG

Michael Porter Jr. has carved out a significant role with the Denver Nuggets, and his 2023-24 season numbers of 16.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game underscore his scoring prowess. Despite a dip in his playoff performances, 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, Porter Jr is critical to what the Nuggets do on offense.

If the natural sharpshooter can continue to develop his defensive instincts and stay healthy, Porter Jr. could elevate his status among the top small forwards in the league, making him a crucial piece for Denver's aspirations to remain contenders. With Kentavious Caldwell-Pope gone, however, Porter Jr might need to elevate his level more to help Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray lead the team to another Finals appearance.

14. Jaden McDaniels

Credit: Gary A.Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 10.5 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 1.4 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Jaden McDaniels' 2023-24 season showcased his defensive prowess, despite a modest offensive output of 10.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. His value to the Minnesota Timberwolves comes from his ability to guard multiple positions, providing the team with a versatile defensive presence who can match up against opposing stars.

McDaniels’ combination of length, lateral quickness, and shot-blocking ability allows him to impact games defensively, making him a key component of Minnesota's defensive schemes. Make no mistake, the Timberwolves are in the conversation for an NBA championship because of how dominant McDaniels can be defensively alongside Rudy Gobert, and there will be expectations for the 25-year-old to improve his offense a little more to make him a well-rounded starter.

15. Miles Bridges

Credit: Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 21.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Miles Bridges made a strong return in the 2023-24 season with averages of 21.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, reminding everyone of his athletic ability and scoring talent. After missing time due to off-court issues, Bridges reestablished himself as a primary offensive option for the Charlotte Hornets

His explosiveness in transition, ability to finish at the rim, and improved three-point shooting make him a dynamic threat. Bridges' versatility allows him to play both forward positions effectively, adding valuable flexibility to Charlotte's lineup. The Hornets are banking on Bridges to be a cornerstone of their future, and his development on both ends of the court will be pivotal as they aim to build a competitive team that can win more than 21 games next season.

16. Herb Jones

Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 11.0 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.8 BPG

Herb Jones continues to prove himself as a defensive specialist for the New Orleans Pelicans, as evidenced by his 2023-24 averages of 11.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while making the All-NBA Defensive First Team and finishing fifth in DPOY rankings. Jones' length, defensive instincts, and ability to guard multiple positions make him one of the most versatile defenders in the NBA.

His contributions are often seen in the hustle plays, deflections, and charges taken, providing a much-needed defensive edge for New Orleans. Offensively, Jones is still developing but has shown signs of growth, particularly in his three-point shooting (41.8%) and ability to finish around the rim. However, expect Jones to continue his development as a two-way wing and he could rise in the rankings sooner rather than later.

17. Deni Avdija

Credit: Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 14.7 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 3.8 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Deni Avdija had a solid 2023-24 campaign with the Washington Wizards, averaging 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Avdija's versatility and size make him a valuable piece for the Wizards as they continue their rebuilding efforts. On a team filled with underperforming players including Jordan Poole, Avdija has been a bright spot.

As he continues to develop his three-point shooting (37.4%) and offensive consistency to match his defensive prowess on the wing, Avdija has the potential to become a more prominent player for the Wizards, giving them a flexible piece in their quest to build a competitive roster.

18. Grayson Allen

Credit: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.0 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Grayson Allen posted solid numbers in the 2023-24 season, averaging 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game for the Phoenix Suns as a two-way player alongside Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.

Known for his three-point shooting and scrappy play style, Allen provides the Bucks with an offensive spark off the bench or as a spot starter. His ability to space the floor and hit shots from beyond the arc has been a key element for Phoenix's spacing. Allen will hopefully be able to have a similar impact as last season in 2024-25 for the star-studded team.

19. Bennedict Mathurin

Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 14.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.0 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.2 BPG

Bennedict Mathurin averaged 14.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in the 2023-24 season for the Indiana Pacers, showcasing his scoring talent and athleticism. Mathurin's potential as a two-way wing is one of the reasons the Pacers are high on his development, hoping he can grow into a more consistent outside shooter and defender.

His second year in the NBA was promising, but Mathurin will need to develop a more well-rounded game, especially in playmaking and defensive consistency, to climb higher in future rankings. The swingman will also need to stay healthy after only appearing in 59 games, and if he can stay on the court, the Pacers will be a problem in the East.

20. Dillon Brooks

Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.7 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Dillon Brooks is known for his defensive tenacity and grit, and his 2023-24 season averages of 12.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game reflect his role as a "3-and-D" player for the Houston Rockets. Brooks is tasked with guarding the opposing team's best perimeter player, and his intensity on defense often sets the tone for his team. His ability to get under opponents' skin and disrupt their offensive flow is invaluable.

Offensively, Brooks' shot selection and efficiency have been areas of concern throughout his career. While he has the ability to knock down shots from deep (35.9%), his inconsistency has limited his overall impact. The swingman will need to get his three-point shooting efficiency up and once he does, the Rockets will benefit from better floor-spacing.

21. Andrew Wiggins

Credit: Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Andrew Wiggins' 2023-24 season with the Golden State Warriors saw him average 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. After his breakout performance in the 2021-22 season that helped the Warriors win a championship, Wiggins has not managed to maintain that level of play for reasons that we aren't exactly aware of.

Wiggins' scoring has been steady, but his efficiency and role within the offense have fluctuated, partly due to injuries, off-court issues, and adjustments to team dynamics. When healthy, his versatility and defensive prowess make him a key cog in the Warriors' lineup but there is a reason why the swingman has been involved in trade rumors over the past two seasons.

22. De’Andre Hunter

Credit: Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.3 BPG

De’Andre Hunter averaged 15.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game during the 2023-24 season for the Atlanta Hawks. Known for his defensive capabilities, Hunter also brings a scoring punch, particularly from mid-range and beyond the arc. Offensively, Hunter continues to develop his game to keep his place in the Hawks lineup.

He has become more efficient in his shot selection and is more confident as a spot-up shooter and driver. For Atlanta, Hunter's growth into a reliable two-way wing player is crucial as they continue to build around Trae Young and other core players including No. 1 overall pick and French big man Alex Sarr.

23. Aaron Nesmith

Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.7 BPG

Aaron Nesmith's 2023-24 season with the Indiana Pacers saw him post averages of 12.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. Known for his three-point shooting (41.9% in 2023-24), Nesmith has developed into a solid role player who provides spacing and defensive effort for Indiana.

Defensively, Nesmith brings energy and effort, often guarding opposing wings and playing with high intensity. He is not the most versatile defender but makes up for it with hustle and positioning. As a developing young player, Nesmith's continued growth, particularly in his shooting consistency and defensive awareness, will determine his ceiling in the league.

24. Norman Powell

Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.9 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Norman Powell averaged 13.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game during the 2023-24 season with the Los Angeles Clippers. Powell is a dynamic scorer who can heat up quickly, often providing instant offense off the bench. His ability to create his own shot, particularly driving to the basket or pulling up for mid-range jumpers, adds a valuable dimension to the Clippers' offensive attack.

While Powell's defense has been serviceable, his primary value remains his scoring prowess and his ability to stretch the floor. Consistency has been an issue, and injuries have sometimes limited his impact. However, when healthy, Powell provides a scoring punch that can help tilt the balance in close games, particularly in the postseason.

25. Buddy Hield

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.1 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.8 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Buddy Hield's 2023-24 season with the Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers included averages of 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Hield remains one of the league's better three-point shooters, with his shooting range and quick release making him a constant threat from beyond the arc.

The Golden State Warriors have brought Hield on board to replace Klay Thompson, a difficult task. However, if Hield can average 12 points per game on over 38% from three, he can at least be a capable role player for the Warriors because they will need plenty of scoring help for Stephen Curry.
