The Dallas Mavericks will enter the 2025-26 NBA seasons with high expectations after making some key moves this offseason.
Of course, Dallas missed the playoffs last season after losing in the Play-In Tournament after they traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers at the trade deadline in exchange for Anthony Davis, which was criticized by many around the NBA.
Despite this, the Mavericks have built a solid core of Davis, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II and Kyrie Irving, though the star point guard will miss time to begin the season due to a torn ACL he suffered last year.
Dallas also made some key additions to their roster in the offseason as they selected Cooper Flagg first overall in the 2025 draft and signed D’Angelo Russell in free agency.
While the Mavericks are expected to be a contender in the Western Conference this season, they could also look to make some moves before the trade deadline to bolster their rotation and these three players could be potential trade candidates.
With the Mavericks’ abundance of frontcourt depth, Dwight Powell may be the odd man out once again this season which could see Dallas try to move him.
Last season, the 34-year-old center averaged only 10.0 minutes per game over 55 games and averaged a career-low 2.1 points per game.
That could be the case once again this season due to the Mavericks’ stacked frontcourt which will likely have Powell searching for more playing time. If that is the case, Dallas could look to move the veteran big man as many contenders around the NBA are in need of a backup center.
Jaden Hardy has played a key role for the Mavericks off the bench in his first three seasons in the NBA but with them adding more talent to their roster this offseason, he could also see a decrease in minutes this season.
The 23-year-old guard averaged a career-high 15.9 minutes per game last season but that could change this year and if it does, he could become a potential trade candidate for Dallas.
Of course, Hardy would likely draw interest from many teams around the NBA if he is placed on the trade block and the Mavericks could use him in a package to land another key piece to their roster, though he is one of the few young players Dallas has.
The Mavericks recently re-signed Dante Exum in free agency and while he has played well for Dallas over the last two seasons after making his return to the NBA, he may be in line for a massive cut in minutes this season.
Of course, the addition of Russell in free agency will cut into Exum’s minutes and once Irving returns from injury, he may find himself completely outside of the rotation.
If that ends up being the case, Dallas could look to trade him and with many contenders around the NBA searching for another key backup guard, he could draw some interest.
For the Mavericks, they are looking to make a run at a championship this season and they may have to trade a few of their key players to do so if they want to challenge in the loaded Western Conference.
