The San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks come into the NBA Finals with very different breaks from the game. While both teams are a perfect match, according to NBA legend Magic Johnson, rest, or rust, could decide this series.

A sweep in Game 4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers saw the New York Knicks book their place in the NBA Finals. This gives the Knicks some extra rest. But the Spurs enter the series after a tiring battle for the Western Conference Championship, a full seven-game series. Johnson posted his views on X on June 1, 2026.

“What team will be affected the most? The Knicks, because of their 8 days off, or the Spurs only having 3 days off after a grueling 7-game series before Game 1?”

After the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 on Saturday, May 30, they only get three days of rest before facing the Knicks again on June 3, for Game 1 of the Finals. The Knicks, on the other hand, come in with eight days of solid rest.

The Knicks could suffer from some ring rust, as eight days of resting may cause a decline in physical edge. While the Spurs, who are coming in on less rest, risk fatigue and injury.

The five-time NBA champion expects this to be one of the greatest NBA Finals in history for one reason.

“This is set to be one of the most-watched NBA Finals because both teams peaked at the right time and got hot in the Playoffs!” he added.

The Knicks played ‌six games in the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks. They swept the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cavaliers in the second round and the Conference Finals.

However, while the Knicks have played only 14 games in the postseason, the Spurs have played 18 games. They also faced one of the toughest playoff series in recent memory against the Thunder.

However, San Antonio’s confidence should be high coming into the series. After all, they have ousted the defending champions. The Knicks have a few things to worry about, as Johnson pointed out.

Magic Johnson Warns Knicks About Wembanyama Ahead of NBA Finals

Victor Wembanyama’s postseason performance has already validated his massive potential.

And Magic Johnson has already issued a warning to the Knicks ahead of the series.

“And for the Knicks, I’m wondering who’s going to guard Victor Wembanyama,” Johnson said. “They won’t have as easy ‌a time on offense due to the much better defensive ability of the Spurs compared to their previous matchups against the Hawks, 76ers, and Cavaliers.”

Magic is correct in the issue that he is raising.

All three teams that the Knicks have faced in this postseason so far are among the lowest five defensive teams in this postseason.

The Spurs have been the second-best defensive team in this postseason.

However, on the offensive end, New York has shown that it can take up the big task. But the reality is that the Spurs may have finally met their match.
