I don't think Jordan Brand had me in mind when they conceptualized and constructed the Air Jordan 8 'Phoenix Suns .' One, I've never been a Suns fan. I can't think of a single time I've ever felt like, 'man, I really want the Suns to win.' I don't hate the team, I was an Amar'e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion fan, and I respect Steve Nash and Devin Booker, but yeah, I've never been a fan.

On top of that, the Air Jordan 8 isn't even in my Top 5 Jordan silhouettes. I'm sorry if this wasn't helpful to you, but this shoe is still a thing, and if you disagree with me on any of the previous two points, let's talk sneakers.

Why Is It Called The 'Phoenix Suns'?

It was built for the 20th anniversary of Michael Jordan's first three-peat, referencing the 1993 Finals against Phoenix. That's the official story, and it's the part nobody disputes.

The nickname is a different matter. Sneaker Bar noted at release that plenty of people were calling it the "Knicks" 8, because the blue is Deep Royal rather than Suns purple. One reviewer argued the orange reads closer to neon than Suns orange, and that New York has the better claim. Thirteen years on, it still hasn't been settled — and Jordan Brand later gave the silhouette an actual 'Knicks' colorway.

What Is The Shoe Actually Made Of?

Durabuck across most of the upper — soft like nubuck, durable like leather, which is why the 8 has always been one of the more playable retros. There's a 23 on the lace lock, a Jumpman at the tongue, herringbone rubber below and Air-Sole units in the heel and forefoot.

While the AJ8 might be a little bulky visually, the sneaker is pretty comfortable — once you actually get it on. Sliding your foot into this bad boy is almost like splitting a double team on the perimeter, but it feels great on your feet.

Where Can You Buy Them Now?

Resale only. StockX, GOAT and Flight Club carry pairs. It didn't sell out as quickly as the 'Playoff' 8 that same year, which is part of why it's stayed reachable rather than becoming a grail.
